What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge, as you may have guessed from the name, bridges the gap where teeth are missing. It’s comprised of two or more crowns and one or more false teeth in between. These anchoring teeth are called abutments, while the replacement ones are known as pontics. Generally made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials, dental bridges can restore the strength of your bite, maintain your face shape, and give you a complete smile that you love again.

Types of Dental Bridges

During your consultation, Dr. Kelly will review your dental history, complete a visual exam, and learn more about your aesthetic goals. From there, he can review your treatment options, including traditional and implant bridges in Vancouver. If you want to learn more about each in the meantime, then read on!

Traditional Dental Bridge

Traditional dental bridges are what most people think of when they hear “dental bridge.” This involves us securing a custom dental crown to the teeth on each side of the gap. Then, we bridge the open space with prosthetic teeth, which are custom-made to suit your face shape, dental needs, and smile goals perfectly.

Implant Bridge

Although traditional dental bridges continue to be widely loved, there are some downsides, including that the healthy teeth surrounding the gap need to be altered. That’s not the case with implant bridges. The replacement tooth or teeth are instead secured in place with two dental implants. The benefits don’t end there either; they can last for several decades with proper care!

The Dental Bridge Procedure

The first step of the entire process is the consultation, which is when Dr. Kelly will conduct an assessment of your oral health and determine if a dental bridge is the ideal solution for you. If the answer is “yes,” then he will solidify the details of your treatment plan, including if the teeth surrounding the gap need to be prepped. The final step is the creation and placement of your restoration, which we can do the same day, thanks to our in-house milling unit!

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

Dental bridges continue to be loved by patients and dentists alike because:

  • The high-quality materials used look and feel like natural teeth
  • They can replace up to four missing teeth consecutively
  • The entire process can be completed in as little as two visits
  • They can last for 10+ years with proper care
  • They are easy to maintain
